  1. How about the chorus to “I Really Don’t Care” by Demi Lavato vs. “Shadows of the Night” by Pat Benetar? That’s one of my favorite examples.

  2. One of my favorite examples is Chinese Cafe / Unchained Melody by Joni Mitchell.

  3. Can you tackle “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas interpolating/ripping-off “I’m Going to Leave You” by Journey? Journey opened for Kansas in 1975 and played the song as a work in progress. “Look into the Future” came out in January 1976, and “Leftoeverture” came out in October 1976.

  4. Wouldn’t Ave Maria be an interpolation of PrĆ©lude in C by Bach?

  5. Thinking of the AJJ song “People II: The Reckoning” which, after three original verses and a bridge, Sean Bonnette begins singing a depressing twisted version of Simon and Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson. I’m curious if that section would count as parody or only interpolation. Not only does it borrow the melody, but some of the lyrics.

  6. great research. i think it’s important to expose this. i personally feel that when there is copying, interpolating, covering, it should be required to release with song with the original source creators credited in the title.

    1. Nah, that’s way too extreme. A songwriting credit is perfectly sufficient (and in cases like the Mariah Carey example, arguably /more/ than generous)

    2. I don’t know the original composers sold the rights . Composer’s don’t get credit every album of a celebrity….finus (Billie’s brother) is the only composer openly flaunted by the singer who says nah it’s all his brain .. personally I think composer’s overall need more worship…in all circumstances v the performer

  7. I love this series so much. I think sampling is so cool and interesting, but I think interpolation is even more interesting. One thing though – Ariana Grande’s name has no “D” in her first name. I’ve noticed you pronounce her name as “Arianda”

  8. A great interpolation is Sugarbabes ā€œFreak like meā€ which repurposed Gary Numan’s ā€œAre Friends Electricā€. I love the original but the slightly faster tempo and more modern synth sounds in Sugarbabes version are great too.

  9. One of the most clever interpolations I’ve come across is in Tori Amosā€˜ song, In the Springtime of his Voodoo where she says: ā€œstanding on a corner in Winslow Arizona / and I’m quite sure I’m in the wrong song,ā€ of course interpolating a line from the Eagles song, Take it Easy

  10. Joybringer by Manfred Man is a rock interpolation of Holst’s Jupiter with lyrics added, and it’s brilliant!

  11. Intro to Prodigy’s “Voodoo people” is an interpolation of a Nirvana song, I think.
Also “Italodisco” by the Kolors incorporates a few chords from Righeira’s “Vamos a la playa” right after the lyrics mention the band.

  12. The six notes of ‘That lady and her jockey said’ from Costello’s ‘Mistook me for a Friend’ are interpolated from the Beatles’ ‘And I Love Her’

  13. My understanding is Dr. Dre is said to have preferred re-recording ā€œsamplesā€ for better control over the sound, but methinks other motives were in play.
