  1. You’re so right.I’ve been an older person learning to play the violin. It’s a little confusing between hand reading the processing of the mind but 1 step 1 time 1 measure and you’ll get it.I did❤

  2. My biggest surprise was adjusting my bow hold for cleaner sound. My initial instinctive hold was comfortable but wasn’t producing straight strokes and always scratchy. After looking up proper bow holding and adjusting, my strokes and sound improved.

  3. I’ve been playing violin for 150 days or so, and haven’t played in 2 weeks because I’m not motivated. My biggest surprise has been how technical it is. I mean the details seem so important and sound changing! Thanks for making this video- i needed a boost.

  4. I began private weekly lessons at 63, 2 years later I am still at it. The brain and the fingers are finally connecting. I am still enjoying learning to play the violin!!

  5. My issue is I play violin mostly at 7pm or 9 due to working hour, I had to put on mute on all the time, so gradually I probably learn the wrong sound, I just dont want disturb the next neighbour. They already stressed out with their problems. Until they complaint, then theres nothing I can do.

  6. My biggest surprise would be a mindset thing… I felt like an imposter at first, learning as an adult in the middle of a more advanced group of kids. But it’s like you’ve said, we need to be patient and kinder to ourselves.

  7. Boy, it really is different for an elderly person. I’m 74, just started about 15 months ago. I hit a plateau, then backslid, almost quit. I took a day off from violin, and yesterday did better. I had a lesson today, and actually enjoyed it.
I may never play it in public, but I’ll bet I never have Alzheimer’s.
I practice just about like what this young gal is saying. Little pieces and baby steps.

  8. I use your open string exercises to try new bowing techniques. It’s great.

  9. Being lefty adds some unforeseen challenges…nobody said it would be easy 😉

  10. Each time I see one of your posts I am thankful again for your course. I began in 2018 and now play in several jam session each month. Your clearly structured courses and encouraging videos definitely led to my success. I am forever greatful.

  11. This is so helpful! I played the viola as a child then started playing again as an adult a couple of years ago. Thanks for these tips. There have been many times I thought I was not improving and that I should sound better by now. One thing I do to measure progress is go back and play songs in my older books. The progress is slow but sure while I’m learning 3rd position. I’m glad to be playing again! Thanks!

  12. I’ve been playing violin on and off for 20 years, and I even still struggle with motivation as an adult now! I like your advice on listening to favorite songs. I also teach a teenage/adult student who really struggles and feels frustrated he is not making enough progress. It’s better to focus on small wins rather than perfectionism.🎻

  13. Hi Alison! Such great tips as always. My biggest surprise since I started learning the violin 3 1/2 years ago with your course has been how amazing our brains are. Not just in terms of remembering notes and where they are on the violin, but being able to (with consistent practice) get faster and faster and play passages and pieces that at first seemed so difficult. Our brains are amazing machines that can help us learn anything we work hard at! If you are thinking about starting to learn the violin as an adult, get Alison’s course and do absolutely everything she tells you. You will learn and continue learning and improving. Such a great teacher. Thank you Alison!

  14. I started learning to play the violin nine months ago at age 74. I love playing and practice just about every day. All those things you said in your video are so true. My playing sounded awful to start with and crossing strings was very clumsy, my fourth finger didn’t want to join in but I have persisted and am pleased with my progress. I thought I could tackle your lesson and song book 2 so bought them and worked on them and going well with the lessons but songs a bit tricky so I bought book 1 and am playing with more confidence and fluency. I also downloaded the open strings exercises and warm up with those.
I am having a private lesson every two weeks which is very helpful but I have to say your lessons and song books are excellent and I have learnt so much and love to go back to videos and hear them again. I am immensely grateful for the work you have put into these lessons. Thank you so very much Alison.

  15. Getting a new violin next week. Never played before but can’t wait to try it. 53 now, so better start soon. 😃Your videos are brilliant!

  16. I LISTEN TO YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEOS WHICH HAS HELPED SO MUCH. A FRIEND CAME OVER AND HANDED ME A VIOLIN AND SAID I WAS SUPPOSE TO PLAY IT. I GOT ON LINE AND STUDIED UP. IT TOOK A LITTLE TIME BUT NOW I AM LOVING THE VIOLIN. I AM A 68 YEAR OLD FEMALE. HUSBAND JUST GOT A MANDOLIN. HE IS LEARNING. WE BOTH PLAY THE BANJO AND GUITAR, SO IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FINDING TIME FOR ALL THREE.

  17. All good tips. Yes, when I started bowing, I didn’t expand and relax enough.

  18. Good tips. I started at 65. Have stuck with it and progressed well. I enjoy the challenge!

  19. I’m 67 I just my 1st lesson. 55 years since last time playing. It definitely sounds like I did 55 years ago. 🙉 But age is a good motivator! 🎻
