Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Soundtrack Medley [Piano] / Evan Call

0:00 1. Great Mage Flamme
1:51 2. Zoltraak
4:32 3. Waltz for Stark and Fern
7:10 4. Frieren the Slayer
9:40 5. One Last Experience
11:22 6. Main Theme

Frieren was my favorite anime of 2024.
I was totally mesmerized by its peaceful storytelling – the stillness, the melancholy, and the way it represents the passage of time. After the final episode in season one, I knew I needed to make something special to catch the essence of Frieren's long journey through the ages.

As a long-time admirer of Evan Call's music, I wanted to pay tribute to his amazing work as soon as again – this time through a collection that unifies 6 of the most renowned soundtracks from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
I organized them as one continuous suite, with no breaks, to musically represent Frieren's past, present, and future.

① Great Mage Flamme (0:00).
The assortment starts in the age of legends. The mystical aura of the Flamme style sets the tone for Frieren's origins as an immortal mage. In 1:33, I included a brand-new transition that links the ancient, spiritual state of mind of Flamme with the powerful Celtic rhythm of Zoltraak. This bridge was inspired by Rachmaninoff's concertos – magic progressing into might.

Two Zoltraak (1:51).
This is most likely the piece everybody recognizes – the battle theme with its renowned Celtic noise. It's also my favorite pianistic obstacle: playing multiple tune lines with just 2 hands, especially around 3:33 where the voices intertwine like dueling spells. The whole section is actually a combination of two soundtracks – Zoltraak and Development of Magic – since they share the very same melody. The outcome is a hybrid of grace and damage, representing the duality of Frieren's power.

③ Waltz for Stark and Fern (4:32).
After the battle, heat returns. Regardless of this style appearing only as soon as in the anime, the waltz scene in between Stark and Fern left a deep impression on me – it recorded an uncommon tender minute in between everybody's favorite couple, Stark and Fern. At 6:15, the abrupt crucial modification gets here entirely suddenly, like a stimulate of emotion that makes your heart avoid a beat. I added an initial coda inspired by Chopin's waltzes to maintain that short lived sensation – a brief dance suspended in time.

④ Frieren the Slayer (7:10).
This is the most technically requiring area of the assortment. I a little shortened a couple of passages from the initial – particularly around 7:33 – to tighten the pacing and hone the accumulation of tension. The tremolos in 8:39 demand stamina and precision, however they also tell a story: the legend of Frieren the Slayer – the immortal who as soon as walked with heroes. Here, the ends up being practically orchestral, embodying her mythical strength.

Five One Last Experience (9:40).
This piece is my psychological core of the assortment. After the heroic storm, everything falls quiet once again. The scene of Frieren and Himmel watching the shooting stars together one last time motivated this entire section. From 10:31, the harmony softens into nostalgia – a musical reflection of how Himmel continues to reside on in her memories.

Six Main Theme (11:22).
To conclude, I went back to the main style in 11:22, arranged in a majestic tutti piano style to bring closure to the journey. However, at 12:08 the music slowly fades into pianissimo – due to the fact that Frieren's story is not over yet. Her journey continues beyond the horizon, silently, endlessly.

This collection is my tribute to Frieren – a story about time, loss, and the quiet beauty of remembrance.
Thank you so much for listening, and for sharing this journey with me as soon as again.

  1. HYPE. It was literally just yesterday I was checking this channel for the first time in so long to see if I had somehow missed an upload, the timing could not be more perfect!

  2. It all makes sense now! This entire time, he’s been on a year-long journey with Frieren, defeating the Piano Demon King.

    1. Bold of you to assume you can defeat the demon king in only a single year when you are traveling with Frieren.

  3. Even before I listen to it, I already know it will be my favorite 2024 Animenz upload…as it’s the only upload of the year, haha :b

    1. Animenz will now publish one video per year.
Only on New Year’s Eve, as a gift!

  4. Listening to Animenz’s Frieren with some spiced wine.
This past year flashes before my eyes scene by scene.
It has been a year filled with significant events: the passing of my grandmother, supporting a dear friend through the tough times of his mother’s illness, and leaving a 12-year career to pursue a new path in psychotherapy/psychoanalysis, to name a few.
It wasn’t an easy year, however many important people stood by my side, and I stood by theirs, and Animenz’s music has been a constant companion throughout. Looking back, every part of the journey feels fulfilling and meaningful, similar as it’s difficult to pick up a favorite part from the medley.
Looking forward to next year, with Animenz’s music as the BGM, to step onto a new adventure! 🎶✨

  5. No one does it like you. The way you always find a way to capture the feeling of the originals when you tramscribe them onto the piano is unbelievable!
Thank you so much for this beautiful Medley!

    1. It’s not just transcription. Music writing and composition as well!

  6. Thank you for waiting, everyone!
At this point, I am basically uploading videos with Frieren’s perception of time.
    Well then, see you soon!

  7. Could be that I’m just a classical music fan, but I love Animenz’s endings to his arrangements. They’re often deviant to the original song, arranged in a manner closer to classical music with incessant “fake” endings and drawn out chords, and sound so grand.
I love it. What a great end to 2024

    1. I am also a classical music lover, and classical contemporary music as a whole has a huge debt to film’s OST composers is general, and anime’s OST composers in particular. And Animenz always elevate the source’s music to new heights. Happy New Year to all, btw.

    2. Don’t call it fake dumbo, call it ‘original’ endings. Calling it fake just adds a negative notion to it.

    3. When I listen to his music I can often be reminded of Chopin, Liszt, etc., and often Mozart’s styles, and they really add to the original OSTs

    4. @ Well, Chopin and Liszt are easily understandable as he has cited them as influence before
I think it’s safe to say that his classical influence (especially considering he went to con) is part of what makes his arrangements unique and standout.

  8. 良いお年を~Wishing you a happy 2025 ! …and hope to hear from you “soon” :b

  9. Theres no greater way honoring a show than with a full size medley from Animenz.
Thank you for all these breathtaking performances and happy new year.

  10. Words can’t describe my happiness right now. This is my favorite anime of the year, and I love the soundtrack so much as well.
Thank you animez! What a wonderful way to end a year.

  11. “Why do you play the piano?”
“Because that’s what Animenz the pianist would have done”

  12. Aura, the person standing before you… is Animenz, a pianist who’s played for over a thousand years

  13. I don’t really like the “end of year” vibe, which makes me even more thankful for this amazing performance. Thank you!! And I hope to see more of your work in 2025! I wish you all the best!
