A song thats also like this is bloom by radiohead they have the drummer phil selway playing 1 beat, the guitarist Johnny greenwood playing on a snare and a 3rd drummer playing on a synth drum
ā@@eoin.1.2most of the songs on the king of limbs are made up of loops of different samples from the bands sessions. It’s the same technique that talking heads used on remain in light.
Last time I checked, playing beats 2 and 4 are impossible if you don’t have a third arm š David’s right. But omitting the rim hit on those beats will make this possible for a single drummer
You would have to adjust it a bit. High hat with left hand (instead of dominant), rim hits with right hand, but on 3rd beat hit the snare with right hand, then switch back to rim hit on the 4th beat followed by the tom hit.
It would be like when drummers are doing quarter notes on the high hat with their dominant hand, but then switch to a snare hit on beat 3, then back to the high hat quarter notes.
All you’d have to do is omit the rim click on the snare hits to make it near indistinguishable from the original and 100% possible.
Let alone using any number of extended techniques (pedal hi hat, double hits, even double sticks) as others have pointed out to make it possible 1:1 with a single drummer.
Song 2 requires 2 drummers only if you don’t know extended percussion techs
Itās possible if you play the eight notes on the hi-hat with your foot. The bass and snare are the same and adding the Tom wouldnāt be so hard, just saying.
@@grandmasterj5 I just put another high hat next to the floor tom, just a bit lower and you can use 1 drumstick to hit rim and high hat at the same time, so yes, it’s very doable

Another impossible song on drums is Message In A Bottle by The Police. In the verses, the hi-hat, ride cymbal and snare drum are played at the same time, which would require 3 arms.
The story that it was a nirvana parody is wrong and needs to be stopped already. Graham the guitarist has said that the band usually jammed heavier songs at band practice as a way to have fun and play the style of music they liked when they were teens but this time the song properly clicked and they liked it. It was never meant to be a parody or piss take on grunge. Google it. Graham himself said it on the old blur forums.
Damon Albarn actually said he originally wrote the song as a lounge song. It was only later when presenting it to the band that it became heavier because of Graham’s disinterest in doing something slower.
Old man bar band drummer here, I wonāt speculate if this can be done by one drummer because I havenāt broken it down properly. But at first blush, I believe it may be doable; only because back in the dark ages, I figured out how to perform Honky Tonk Woman on the kit with the cowbell part seamlessly, (OK, close to seamlessly), without a second track percussionist like on the album.
Dave doesn’t play the whole thing, only the rim hits, snare, bass and tom. He doesn’t play the hi-hat part live, hence he can’t perfectly replicate how it sounds on the album.
the beat itself isn’t even particularly hard to mostly play. The issue is that every beat/quarter there are 3 beats being played by 4 hands. And 2 of them are snare & rimshot, which should not be played on the same drum or they both sound different.

Stomping on the hi-hat petal for the 8th notes instead of hitting the cymbals. Then you do the Tom rhythm with one hand and snare with the other.

You could also do it with a specialised kit, for example with a pedal snare set up to hit the rim, not to mention MIDI triggering.
@leocomerfordĀ Defo. It’s impossible for a standard kit maybe, but it doesn’t take much at all to make it work
Or you could grow a third arm
