  1. another radiohead song that uses alternate tuning is jigsaw falling into place

    1. Jigsaw falling into place is in Open D, and I think david talked about that tuning in his last video

    2. @Connorb2008he did which is why I’m disappointed he didn’t use it as an example since it’s my favorite song

    3. @Connorb2008it uses EBA#DAD so yes but with the 3rd string a semitone lower

  2. Thank you for the next several weeks in musical hyper-fixation and songwriting

    1. The last video inspired me to try out my own weird tuning – CGGGGC – and write a song around it. Pretty cool how starting to deviate from standard just 🤯

  3. Opeth used DADFAE (Dminadd9) tuning on Ghost Reveries album. Simply majestic

    1. Yesss, stunning tuning. Karnivool also used it on Set Fire To The Hive and Deadman (capo 5th), great songs if you’ve not heard of them!

    2. DADFAE is such a pretty sound and dropping it down to C#G#C#EG#D# is also really nice

    3. @alfonzog_musicdropping down alternate tunings is massively underrated. There’s a few songs by a band called Vower (In The Wake Of Failure and I think Eyes Of A Nihilist) where they take it down to a baritone A to get AEACEB, or alternatively Haunted Shores has a couple of songs with it in C, Norway Jose and Nocturnal Hours being the only ones I remember

    4. Ffs adding that to my “listen to next” list. Cheers fellow youtuber

  4. Parabol/Parabola by TooL uses BEDGBE, which is basically a standard 7 string guitar tuning missing the A string

    1. Prison Sex uses BADGBE which was also used by Soundgarden on Badmotorfinger, namely Rusty Cage

  5. Sonic Youth is THE band using unique guitar tunings the most, almost one per song, so they barely have one different guitar for each of their songs

    1. Saw them in 93 and there are less guitar changes than you’d imagine

    2. sure, but soundgarden is better, so i tend to think of them instead when i think of bands that use many alt tunings

    3. @BellsCuriosityShop That’s probably because their live versions are almost always different from the studio recording. If you’ve ever tried to learn how to play their songs you’ll know this pain.

    4. Stephen Malkmus of Pavement is also known for this. I will say Malkmus guitar tunings are a bit better than SY just because he can use a single weird tuning for multiple songs. Love sonic youth but some tunings like F#F#F#F#BE can only be practical for 1 song

  6. sonic youth and My Bloody Valentine basically made careers out of alternate tunings, and some of them are pretty weird. Would be great to mention those ones!

    1. Two of my biggest inspirations 😭 Ive been playing for a year and alternate tunings was the best thing I ever tried
So many riffs I can come up with

  7. I could watch a whole video about Soundgarden’s alternative tunings!

  8. 0:35 – Instant earworm … “plants and birds and rocks and things…”

    1. When Randy Newman heard “ the heat was hot” lyric he said, “that’s a hit”.

  9. Soundgarden uses so many alternate tunings. Superunknown alone has at least 4 different alternate tunings

  10. my brain is so rotted from FACGCE that i heard that open chord and screamed out loud. i was wondering where american football was at during the first video

  11. First thing that came to my mind is the tuning Jimmy Page created for The Rain Song. DGCGCD.
I can’t see it used anywhere else. But as soon as you have that, and you play the opening chord, it’s that moment of , “Of course”, and I defy you not to smile. It’s always my answer to those forum questions, “if you were only allowed to ever play one song on acoustic guitar…”.

    1. For many a time, I also thought that the tuning for “Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin was very unique. But its “only” a C 2 tuning, much related to D 4 tuning (so-called “DADGAD”). Instead of C – G – C – G – C – D he would only lift the low bass string to a D in order to get his “heavy part” done. Throughout the rest of “Rain Song”, since its in G, you have to carefully mute the low string – but not so much once it becomes a D (think of regular open G tuning. Btw. also a fit for that song)

  12. As a bass player turned guitarist, I use all-fourths Eb tuning (Eb–Ab–Db–Gb–B–E), and I’m surprised it’s not more popular. On paper, this tuning seems perfect for punk music since you can play power chords anywhere using the same fingering.

    1. That’s exactly what I do, mostly because I love playing punk with only power chords am often too lazy to bother tuning the top two

  13. I tune mine in D E C A D E because that’s how long it takes me to learn stuff like this

  14. I have two main tunings I use: DADFAD (open D minor) and DGDGBbD (open G minor).

  15. Practically all of Joni Mitchell’s songs are alternate tunings to get the jazz voicings she liked.

  16. i heard the first tuning and thought “hey that sounds like a horse with no name”
