If your bow keeps bouncing when you are not attempting to do any sort of fancy bowing, this video discusses why it takes place and how to calm it down. We take a look at the genuine causes, tension, too much bow, and poor control of where the bow is sitting on the string.

Your Bow Shouldn't Be Doing This!
hello, im just beginning to learn how to play the violine and have been watching your first 6 videos- they are absolutely amazing! 🙂 i just saw this video and thought what a great coincidence as since a couple of days i noticed just that happening to me. I am playing a small test song in which i have to do 1 half note and then 1 short and quick filled note and this is where my bow gets super bouncy, as i have to get it back to where i started with the half note. it does that in the middle of the bow only and i have tried tilting it which did not help…im supposed to use a lot of the bow so im not sure how i can make this work, havent succeeded so far.. 🙁
Thanks for watching! Try staying closer to the frog for that part instead of using too much bow.
As a beginner I tend to focus too much on the fingerboard while just keeping the bow on the strings and reversing back and forth without ever lifting and resetting. It’s a bad habit that not only leads to bouncing from playing too far from the center of the bow, but ’the constant sawing’ also leads to sliding sideways on the strings, away from the desired contact point.
It’s kind of stupid as the left hand will do fine from muscle memory and the corrections from the ears, not the eyes.
But, how common is it, to actually practicing just the bowing technique on an open string?
It is actually a great idea to practice bowing separately on open strings, that is how everyone starts. But id also incorporate some scales in there as they are things you can do where the eyes can focus on the bow and the brain can focus on the right hand whilst the left hand just puts one finger down next the the previous one.
I’m so happy I found your violin tutorials! 🥹 Your way of teaching is so clear and encouraging.I’ve reached Lesson 6 now, and I can already see my progress thanks to you.
I am facing this issue(bouncing/shaking) with the upper half of the now. I am using lower half for most of the notes
Hi Alison – My bow only bounces when I attempt to use either a wrist or arm vibrato. 😒 And because of that, I only use a so-called finger vibrato; and then all the bouncing goes away – Yippee! 😊🎻
Well explained thanks… My wrist is stuck, trying in front of a mirror not easy. My left hand is not independent enough from the bow…
