The scale, also called the scale, is the 5th mode of the Melodic small scale. This scale has a bright significant sound at the bottom and a darker minor noise at the top, giving it an appealing, unique sound.

  1. It’s funny that I was using this scale for my one of my student’s lesson. And I got the notification of this. Cool!

  2. I honestly think that Twilight uses modal interchange rather than the mixolydian b6 chords. That’s because an Ab6 chord features a Eb, not a E natural that you’d get in the mixolydian b6 scale

  3. Nice work like always. You have no idea how much I have learnt about music theory just by watching your videos.

  4. I think I just figured out why Jazz musicians used to call each other cats; listen to those note choices 😂😂

  5. Awoken by H8_Seed is what introduced me to this scale and music theory as a whole. Uses the scale as its home sort of as a bridge between major and minor. As the scale is so smack dab inbetween major and minor, a little bit of modal mixture lets the song’s vocal melody/harmony use all ten notes that would collectively belong to D major and D minor without being too jarring.

I personally call it the emo scale because that’s how it’s used more often than not in western music hahaha.

Jonestown by Post Malone is another good example of it.

  6. This is the same as the scale built on the Vth degree of the melodic minor. Btw, doesn’t the beginning of the “Twilight” remind of “Forever Young” by Alphaville ? Or rather vice versa 😉

  7. I’m amazed you haven’t ran out of songs OR scales yet. Excellent work, as always!

  8. Yesss so glad you included a NIN song! I think Mixo b6 shaped Trent Reznor’s sound for the bulk of his career. It’s so beautiful and haunting. Great video David! I wonder how hard it was for you to choose from all the Radiohead songs with that vamp! 😉

  9. Flawless explanation as usual but sorry David…Millie is stealing the show (and with taste by playing outside)

  10. 0:15, not sure if it’s on purpose but you play B mixolydian flat 6 instead of C. 😊

  11. I was asking myself in these days which scale the I iv chord progression belongs to, so thanks for answering 😄

  12. A great example of Mixolydian flat 6 is Wonderboy by Tenacious D – that’s the first example I ever encountered and was captured by. Also Remember Me from Coco has the same vamp.

  13. p.s. Mixolydian b6 is such a laborious mouthful, like you said, so I’ve started calling it Mixy flat sixy. Or Mixo flat sixo, if you will.

  14. I’m not sure it makes sense to say the I iv vamp is using the mixolydian flat 6th scale. I mean the “mixolydian” part is the flat 7th, which is… not at all being used in those 2 chords. So what scale has just the flat 6th from a major scale?
